They're Arctic Survivors

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as any other region, and the loss of summer sea ice and the early snowmelt is a major concern for scientists who study wildlife on the North Slope. Wildlife has no choice but to adapt to the rapidly changing conditions.

WCS’s Tom Glass uses satellite-tracking collars to observe the ways wolverines may be adjusting. The satellite collars provide several months of data, with no harm to the wolverine.

We have been studying Alaska’s wolverines since 2014 with the goal, Glass says, “to understand ecological relationships between this species and the environment in this quickly changing place.”

It’s this kind of proactive conservation science that will help ensure vulnerable species survival in the years ahead.
