Our team was on the ground at the 11th Our Ocean Conference, which aimed to unite governments, communities, innovators, and businesses with a focus on jobs, equity, and healthy oceans.
“WCS is committed to drive support directly to the front lines of ocean conservation,” said WCS's Dr. Susan Lieberman, “whether that’s leveraging resources directly into to coastal communities and women leaders or using the latest global climate change science to identify and protect the world’s most climate-resilient coral reefs.”
Our Reefs, Our Future is a new global campaign from WCS, WWF, and TNC, with support from the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative, that's calling on governments to prioritize and protect climate-resilient coral reefs worldwide. It encourages governments to use these moments to announce new actions for coral reefs, strengthen protections for climate-resilient reef systems, and increase investment in conservation and management.
The commitments mark concrete progress toward the global goal of effectively and equitably protecting 30 percent of the world's ocean ecosystems by 2030.
26 women rangers, fishers, and community leaders from 11 African nations unite for the first time as a collective—issuing a declaration for dignity, justice, and healthy oceans.
Kenya, Comoros, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and the United Kingdom are the newest signatories to the High-Level Climate-Resilient Coral Reef Commitment. It brings the total number of signatories to 20.
Madagascar announced it will offer full national protection for 14 species of sharks and rays, while Zanzibar offered full protection for 34 species in its coastal waters.
New WCS science shows some reefs still have a meaningful chance to survive and recover from climate impacts—provided they are protected, write WCS's Stacy Jupiter and Melissa Wright of Bloomberg Philanthropies.
In the next five years, WCS aims to reverse declines of key marine species and to restore ecological integrity to strengthen nature’s resilience across priority seascapes to lay the groundwork for recovery.
