Thank you for your insight as we explore America’s affinity with our beloved national mammal. Your voice will feed into market research we are actively conducting.
The buffalo’s recovery is a success story at the heart of Wildlife Conservation Society’s history. During the 1800s, relentless hunting pushed buffalo to the brink of extinction—with less than 500 remaining.
WCS stepped in and began conserving and protecting buffalo with great success: wild buffalo numbers are up to 20,000 today, protected by Indigenous Tribes, non-profits, and government agencies across North America.
While their scientific name is a bison (Bison bison), some cultures and Indigenous tribes refer to this beloved animal as a buffalo. Buffalo or bison, take a quiz now to see just how well you know our National Mammal!
