Elephant Origami Challenge

The Fold

When we launched the Elephant Origami Challenge in the summer of 2016, we hoped it would strike a chord. We had no idea. Boxes and boxes of beautiful origami poured in. All 50 states and 40-plus countries were represented. Your work was incredible. Your stories touched us.

St. Ann's Church for the Deaf

"We have to educate people on how to save the world's animals, especially the elephants."

Artist Talo Kawasaki

"We're dealing with something rather tragic and I wanted to bring more attention to that messaging."

Icahn Charter School 2, Bronx, NY

"Ivory should be the elephant's jewelry, not people's." –Emma, 6th Grade

The Count

For the official Guinness World Records ™ title count, we received 204,481 pieces of origami—far more than we had the ability to process for this record. Still, the final display of all your hard work was impressive. And we shattered the previous record of 33,000-plus!

A Global Origami Display

Following the count, we just had to show off your great work. For the 2016 holiday season, we set up a display in our historic Zoo Center building at the Bronx Zoo.
